Diesel Mechanics
Marine diesel mechanics are another important trade in St. Maarten. Yachts and commercial vessels need experienced mechanics who can diagnose and repair marine engines, rather than simply replace parts.
For experienced marine diesel mechanics, opportunities can be available on both a seasonal and permanent basis.
Welders & Fabricators
The yacht industry also needs experienced welders and fabricators. Marine fabrication can involve stainless steel, aluminium and specialist yacht repairs and refits. Experience in the marine or yacht industry is therefore a major advantage.

Fiberglass Technicians
Experienced fiberglass technicians are also needed for yacht repair, maintenance and refit work. As with the other trades, employers aren’t simply looking for someone who has worked with fiberglass. Experience working on yachts and understanding marine construction and repair is highly valuable.
Can Foreigners Get Maritime Jobs in St. Maarten?
Yes. Many employers in St. Maarten recruit internationally when the right skills aren’t available locally. This is far more common than you might think, particularly in the marine industry. We’ve seen employers willing to bring experienced professionals from the Netherlands and the United States to the island.
For some positions, Dutch or US citizenship can also make the work-permit process considerably easier. However, experience and technical ability remain the most important factors.
