Why we chose Mutiny
How We Chose a Life of Freedom on the Water
The truth is simpler than most people expect: we stopped accepting a life that didn’t fit. Mutiny wasn’t a dream… it was a decision.
We had been backpacking almost from the moment we laid eyes on each other. It clicked instantly. Both of us knew, bone-deep, that a “normal life” in Belgium or the Netherlands would slowly crush us. So we sold everything we had and left. No long-term plan. Just movement.

Mutiny isn’t just our boatname, it’s a statement
Life on the Road: Freedom Without Roots
Years passed like that. Always on the road, always adapting, always working just enough to keep going. It was freedom, but it was also exhausting in ways people don’t talk about. Living out of backpacks and jumping from one hostel to the next never gives you stability. There was no place to return to at the end of a long day. No real sense of home.
That was exactly the part of normal life we missed! Not the travel at all, but the lack of something that was truly ours. And then somewhere in Thailand, while we were working as English teachers, another expat asked us one simple question that changed our entire lives forever: “Why don’t you consider living on a sailboat?”

Exhausting in ways people don’t talk about.
Why We Chose a Sailing Life
At first, it sounded ridiculous. Sailboats were for yachties in Lacoste polos, socks in sandals, and overpriced sunglasses. We couldn’t have been further removed from that world. Still, curiosity won.
We started watching YouTube sailing videos, reading every book we could find, talking to as many sailors as possible, and finding our way into the sailing community. Not the polished version, but the gritty, committed one. And commitment was something we weren’t afraid of.

Then someone asked us a simple question: Why don’t you consider living on a boat?
Finding Our Way to Greece: The First Step Toward Living on a Sailboat
To get closer to that world, we had to be where boats actually were. At the time, we were teaching English abroad in Vietnam, but that wasn’t the place to find a future afloat. So we aimed for Greece. There’s always work. Always!
The only real question is what you’re willing to do to get where you want to be. We worked for a roof over our heads, antifouling charter boats on the Ionian coast of Greece. Long days, hard labor, blue-stained skin, and exhaustion that sinks into your bones. But that wasn’t the cost that was the investment. Our real salary was knowledge.

Commitment was something we weren’t afraid of.
How to Find an Affordable Sailboat in Europe
We studied, observed, asked questions, made mistakes, and learned tons and tons. Greece turned out to be the perfect place to search for old boats in forgotten boatyards. If you’re looking to buy a cheap sailboat in Europe, the Greek boatyards are an overlooked goldmine. After many false hopes, one phone call changed everything.
That call marked the beginning of a new life. Another conversation that changed our lives even more. We finally chose something that was ours. This is often how it starts! When you don’t yet realize you’re finishing something else.

“Guys, I have something cheap and cheerful for you… It is a…”
